SET Protocol, which is the most secure standard for credit card payments, was developed by a consortium headed by Visa and MasterCard in order to provide security in electronic transactions and has become an industry standard.

SET protocol uses a combination of Public Key Cryptography, DES (Data Encryption Standard), RSA (Rivest, Shamir, Adleman) encryption methods, and through virtual wallet and digital certificate it provides a more secure transaction.

SET, ensures the confidentiality and integrity of the payment information, that the card is not being used fraudulently, and the merchant has an agreement with the bank.

SET is considered as an end-to-end payment protocol as it covers the issuer bank of the credit card and the acquirer bank of POS together with the credit card owner and the merchant, verifies all the parties take place in the electronic transaction. At the same time, as the credit card and order information are encrypted separately, it prevents card information to be browsed by the merchant.
